Question Training a Dog to Snarl/Growl on Command

Now, I've got a very rough idea how to go about it but I wanted some opinions.

How would you guys go about teaching a dog to snarl/growl on command? It's something that intrigues me and I'm curious to know what process and what would be the best way to start teaching it and cuing it to a command word or signal.

My thoughts would be to capture it during a play session where Kaylee can become vocal (at least as vocal as she gets)

Hm, no idea! Good question though!! Ollie will growl on a leash when I say "get 'em" if there is someone around.

During play is a good idea I think. It would be quite a clever thing to teach actually.
I reckon your idea is a good one though. You'd want to catch a play growl instead of an actual growl, so that'd be the best, and probably only, option.

Yes, if you can capture it, definitely use that to your advantage! Mark is working on snarling Ozzy's lip & he's got a little routine where he looks very serious at him & grrrrrrrrrrrs ... when he points to his snout, he's starting to do it. (Of course, now I've had to break my already bad habit of pointing as my "hey, knock it off, boys" 'command'). Gee thanks, Daddy Dawg.

Yep it's a capture thing.

Harder than "speak", obviously, but it's the same behaviour.

I used to teach my boys to 'sing'. They'd howl on command. Hillarious stuff.

I can't teach EITHER of my dogs to speak on command. I'm such a failure! LOL (they're not big barkers & I've got them pretty well trained to shut up on command but capturing just isn't cutting it for me).

Good lord. You can't frustrate them enough for them to bark at you?

Katz, I'm right there with you. Kaylee doesn't bark unless there is a reason to. I CAN NOT make her annoyed, frustrated or hyper enough to bark, so that's something I haven't been able to teach yet.

Growl (sorta) yes, and it takes a long while to work up to it

Say you get a hot dog slice... and you hold it in your closed hand and wave it around a little bit under Jagger's nose.... ask him if he wants a treat you know... work him up for it, but then not let him get it.

Won't he claw and mouth you hand and do anything he can to get it? Won't he eventually bark at you for being an *******?

The only thing that makes Ozzy bark in an amped fashion are the 2 dogs who live 2 doors down. He HATES those dogs.

I can get Ozzy to make an "Owwww Wooowwww Owwwwww Wooooow" sound if he's asking to go outside & I ignore him. It's cute, I should train that one instead.

I doubt I could get Ozzy to growl on command.

With Jagger, all I'd need to do is mess with his bones, bullysticks, etc. & I could capture that & get the growl, snarl, snap on command. Honestly, we are making progress with that (in the opposite direction, of course).

That's as close as I can get to frustration with either one of them.

He will wiggle & jiggle & wag his tail ... and do that until he's busting out of his skin. Then, if that doesn't work, he'll rear up (in place ... but not come forward <he knows better>) like a horse.

Smiley, I know if I did that with Kaylee she would start jumping up and down in place, probably throw a few behaviors and then sit down and just scoot as close as she could to be on her butt.

And then if she couldn't make that work she might stand on her head for awhile and finally get tired and go get into something I don't want her to

All without making a sound

I bet I could get him to speak.

Not because I'm a better trainer... but because he'd think it'd be ok to bark at ME.

He just doesn't want to yell at momma.
